AI Will Not Replace Experienced RCM Operators, But It May Change Their Job

By G R Capital Management LLC

One concern I hear regularly from medical billing and RCM owners is that AI may replace people. I do not believe that is the right way to look at it. AI is more likely to change the type of work people perform inside an RCM company than to eliminate the role itself.

What Is Likely to Be Automated

The lower-value work is at risk of being automated or significantly reduced. Examples include:

  • repetitive claim status checks
  • basic eligibility verification
  • routine appeal letter drafting
  • simple denial categorization
  • manual report preparation
  • repetitive payment posting exceptions
  • administrative follow-up tasks

What Is Likely to Become More Valuable

The higher-value work is not going away. In fact, it may become more important.

Strong RCM employees understand payer behavior, provider documentation habits, specialty-specific issues, client relationships, workflow discipline, and how to solve problems that do not fit neatly into a software rule. That knowledge still matters — and the companies that win will likely be the ones that use AI to support their people, not replace them.

A Shift in Where People Spend Their Time

The goal should be to move staff away from repetitive task processing and toward higher-leverage work:

  • exception management
  • denial prevention
  • payer escalation
  • client communication
  • performance analysis
  • workflow improvement
  • specialty-specific billing strategy

The Management Question

For owners, this creates an important question to sit with: are you building a team of claim processors, or are you building a team of revenue performance specialists? That distinction may become increasingly important as clients and buyers evaluate what kind of organization they are working with.

The Buyer’s View

From a buyer’s perspective, a company with experienced people, documented processes, useful technology, and measurable client outcomes is much more attractive than a business dependent on manual effort alone.

AI may not eliminate good RCM employees. But it may make weak workflows harder to hide.
